Sadie
I was out last night making my round
I met my Sady and I shot her down
I run home and jumbed in the bed
A fourty four caliber under my head.
I woke next morning at half past nine
The horses and hacks were formed in line
Sports and gamblers gathered around
To cary my Sady to the buring ground.
Then I got to studying of the deed Id done
I jumped out a bed and away I run
I made a good run but a little to slow
They over took me in Jeryico.
Standing on the corner reading a bill;
Up stepped the sherf Mr. Tho’s Hill,
Says young man ain’t your name brown
Do you rem. the night you shot your Sady down.
My name’s Brown my name’s lee
I murdered my Sady in the first degree,
First degree second degree
If you’ve got any papers please read them to me.
They took me down town, dressed me in black,
Put me on the train, sent me back
I had no friends to go my bail
They shoved me back in the county jail.
The sheriff called court the judge took his stand
He held them papers in his right hand
Says forty long years fourty long nights;
You’ll have to wear those ballin strips
Now all young men take my advise
Never do take your sady’s life
It will cause you to weep, it will cause you to mourn
It will cause you to loose your Home Sweet Home.
