Charlie Grew.
Charlie Grew was a cowboy,
And making plans one day,
Said “Boys, I’ll tell you something
Before we go away.
You see I’m only a cowboy,
Like you, dressed all in rags;
I used to be a gay one,
Bent on some great big game,
Though O have a home in Dixie,
A good one, too, you know,
Although I have’nt seen it
Since many a year ago.
I’m going to my home in Dixie;
I’m going to see tham all
I’m going to see my mother
When the work’s all done this Fall.
Then when this round up is over,
As certain as there is a dawn,
I’m going to my home in Dixie
Before my money’s all gone.
Mother’s heart is breaking;
It’s breaking for me, that’s all.
By God’s help I’ll see Mother
When the work’s all done this fall.
That night this very cowboy
Went out to stand his guard.
The wind was blowing swiftly,
The coast was storming hard.
The cattle they all got scattered,
And runnning at wild, stampeded,
A trying his best to stop them,
By turning their heads about
His cattle horse did stumble
And under him did fall.
So he’ll not see his Mother,
When the work’s all done this Fall.
They picked him up so gently
And laid him on the bed.
The cowboys all were looking
To see if he were dead.
He opened wide his blue eyes
And gazing all around
Says, “Boys, my last step is taken
I’ll never walk the ground.
Jack, You will have my pistol,
And Ted , you take my bed.
Send my saddle to Mother
After I am dead.
I’m going to a new ranch,
I heard the Master’s call.
By God’s help I’ll see Mother
When the work’s all done
next Fall.
