This image shows William Howard Plemmons, president of Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) from 1955 to 1969, talking with two Appalachian students by the front entrance of the second Administration Building, built 1924. Plemmons had served various educational posts with the University of North Carolina since 1941, and was executive secretary of the North Carolina State Education Commission for three years. He took over the post from interim president J. D. Rankin, who retired in September 1955, and served as Appalachian president until his retirement. He died in 1984. This image appears in the 1956 Rhododendron (p. 139).
